About the BCA Artist Residency Program

This non-traditional, ten-week residency program provides a unique support system for individual artists, including funding, studio assistance, and the opportunity to experiment and share one’s practice with an audience through three individually designed workshops. This residency seeks to help artists explore audience engagement outside of typical art education models. The residency may be especially appealing for artists who are interested in public programs but who have limited experience with them, or would like to take their current practice in a new, more public direction.  In 2010-2011, the BCA will select three artist residents.

Financial Support: The artists are provided with a $1500 award to be used as the artist sees fit.

Studio Space: For ten weeks, the artist will be provided with a work space studio located in the Artist Studio Building on the BCA campus.  This fourth floor studio is approximately 239 square feet with windows and an independently controlled heating unit.  Sinks and running water are available on the floor, but not in the studio.  This is a great opportunity to join a community of nearly 50 artists including painters, printmakers, sculptors, filmmakers, craftspeople, writers, performing artists and others.

Studio Assistance: For the duration of the residency, the artist will be provided with a studio assistant intern for an average of eight to twelve hours a week, with a schedule to be coordinated by the artist, intern and program manager.

Audience Engagement: The BCA will provide an opportunity for each artist to share their work with a new audience through three workshops and discussions. The artist should be committed to presenting his or her concepts and/or techniques interactively to the group, through activities rather than a traditional “artist’s talk.” The content and format for these activities will be jointly determined by the BCA and the artist, though the artist should apply with a general idea of the concepts and/or techniques he or she would like to explore and what activities might best serve those goals. The BCA will provide the audience and workshop support in the form of strong planning assistance, making curriculum connections, if applicable, and co-presentation, if desired. The workshops may be planned individually or as a set.  Depending on the artist proposal selected, the target audience age will range from middle school students to adults.   In addition, the residency will begin and end with a reception, open studio or another community event decided by the artist resident and program manager.

Submission and Timeline: Proposals must be received by June 30, 2010.
