Fine Arts Work Center

The Fine Arts Work Center celebrates 50 years of supporting emerging artists and writers with the commemorative exhibition Visual Fellows Spotlight: Featuring Lisa Yuskavage, May 4–May 20 at the Mills Gallery, Boston Center for the Arts. Yuskavage, a Fine Arts Work Center Fellow from 1986–1987, will be honored on Friday, May 4, at a benefit fundraiser in the gallery. Her work, as well as work from additional past fellows, will be on view May 4–May 20.

Lisa Yuskavage is widely associated with a re-emergence of the figurative in contemporary painting. Her particular portraiture, with its elements of lavishness, eroticism, and maximal, open narratives, seamlessly blend pop cultural imagery and color theory as conduits for complex psychological constructs. She is represented by David Zwirner Gallery, and her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide, including The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2011); Museo Tamayo Arte Contempor√°neo, Mexico City (2006); Royal Academy of Arts, London (2002); Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva (2001); and the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (2000).

Additional Visual Fellows Spotlight participating artists include Elliott Hundley, Jack Pierson, Jacolby Satterwhite, Jennifer Packer, and Heidi Hahn, among others. The exhibition celebrates the artistic achievements of individual artists who, early in their careers, received a vote of confidence in the form of an invitation from The Fine Arts Work Center: to live and work in Provincetown, MA for seven months, in the company of peers, with a sole responsibility to their work. The Work Center has, for 50 years, provided to ten artists annually an apartment, a studio, and a living stipend at crucial stages in individual careers. Past fellows have gone to exhibit their work in solo exhibitions at the most esteemed galleries and museums in the United States and abroad.
