The Boston Center for the Arts is pleased to present British artist Martin Creed in a solo exhibition of The Lights Going On and Off, at the Mills Gallery, September 14 – October 28.

Organized by curator Laura Donaldson, this exhibition marks the Boston debut of Creed, an internationally renowned artist. The Lights Going On and Off is one of Creed’s most well known works, for which he received the Turner Prize in 2001.

The title is descriptive – in the work the lights go on and off, like someone flipping a switch, repeatedly and at set time intervals. Using the existing track lights in the Mills, it will fill the entire 2200 sq. foot space for an installation that is pointedly spare and quietly provocative, with a touch of humor and wonder at the role of inspiration in the creative process. Ultimately, The Lights Going On and Off is an experiential art viewing event, one that is both challenging and poetic.

Born in Wakefield, England, in 1968, Martin Creed graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 1990. He has exhibited and performed in solo and group exhibitions and biennales around the world. This past summer the first North American survey of his work, Feelings, was presented at the Hessel Museum and Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College Galleries. In the last year he has presented solo exhibitions and projects at Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan; Curzon Mayfair Cinema, London; Hauser and Wirth, Zurich; MC, Los Angeles; Michael Lett Gallery, Auckland; and Johnen Galerie, Berlin. His work was also featured in How to Improve the World, Hayward Gallery, London; Of Mice and Men: 4th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art; and Scape, 2006 Biennial of Art in Public Space, in Christchurch, New Zealand, among other venues. His work is in the collections of some of the most important museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Tate, London.

Martin Creed is represented by Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York, Hauser and Wirth, London and Zurich; and Johnen & Schöttle, Cologne.
