Born in Russia, Selina Narovlansky received her Masters Degree in Applied Art, specializing in textiles, from the Moscow Stroganoff College of Fine Arts and Design. She continued her study in design at the renowned Senesh Experimental Design Studio, participating in conceptual projects with an emphasis on teaching and learning.

In the United States, she became a member of the New England Artist Trust, participated in the Artist’s Congresses, and was the recipient of several grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She took courses at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in New York.

For the past 20 years, she has been working at her BCA studio, developing original painting-on-silk techniques to create signature pieces of clothes and abstract compositions for the wall.

Mediums and methods applied

Painting and monotype on silk with Procion MX textile dyes, the original technique of painting and monotype on silk, where hand mixed dyes are applied immediately to fabrics; and ink painting on rice or waxed paper, where ink is applied to wet paper, and colors are mixed while the latter is still wet.

Both of these techniques involve spontaneity and experimentation with color.

Work Concept

Experimentation with color, specifically of simultaneous contrast, creating three dimensional objects with unique, hand painted fabric or other fiber materials.

Concern with the expression of Color, Light and Transparency.

Interest in developing this work for installations.
