ANIKAYA Dance Theater weaves together music, dance and storytelling to create works that pull from the full range of the body’s communicative capabilities. They incorporate traditional forms, internalizing them and then allowing them to reemerge as part of a new movement vocabulary. The result is work that is resonant of deep-rooted traditions, without being bound to any particular genre, place or practice. They have traveled wide and studied deeply to bring you these, the gifts of the body.

During their residency, ANIKAYA will develop Entangling, a collaboration between US-based choreographer Wendy Jehlen and Lacina Coulibaly, a contemporary choreographer and dancer from Burkina Faso, West Africa.

Inspired by the phenomenon of Quantum Entanglement, in which two atoms become linked to each other, Entangling explores how we are inextricably and consequentially connected to each other. Entangling investigates the interlacing of the internal, physical energy between two human beings. As they move together, each individual becomes invested in the other, and there develops a sense of deep interdependence. Entangling has been developed in New York City, Boston and Bamako, Mali.

Afrorhythm Movement Lab with Lacina Coulibaly
International choreographer, Lacina Coulibaly will lead a workshop in conjunction with Resident Choreographer, ANIKAYA, at Boston Center for the Arts. This workshop is for experienced movers and will focus on the musicality, kinetic form, gestures and movements of traditional West African dance and its modern/contemporary manifestations.

More about Lacina:
Born in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Lacina Coulibaly’s professional career is deeply rooted in traditional African dances, and later merged with contemporary influences to create a uniquely African choreographic expression. In 1995, Lacina created the Cie Kongo Bâ Teria with Souleymane Badolo and Ousseni Sako. Their creations, Frères sans stèles (1999), Vin Nem (2001) et Hydou Bye (2004) toured the world and won international awards, including the award of 3rd place at SANGA, les Rencontres Choréographiques for Vin Nem (2001) which toured more than 30 cities in Europe in 2002 and throughout the United States on the Movement (R)Evolution tour. Beyond his continuing work with his company Kongo Bâ Teria, he has danced and choreographed with other international dance companies, such as Salia ni Seydou, Faso Danse Theatre, and TchéTché, he has also collaborated artistically with individual artists, such as Emily Coates (USA), Catherine Young (Ireland), Amy Sullivan (USA), and Pipaluk Vibeke (Denmark).

Since 2007 he has conducted major residencies in American universities, including Yale, Brown, and the University of Florida: his unique blend of traditional and modern influences results in dynamic intellectual and artistic processes that intrigue and inspire young artists, and audiences. Lacina’s choreography often provokes questions of the (dis)integration of the traditional and the contemporary. His newest work, entitled Transcendence, is a solo that explores the place of faith in urban life. He and his company Kongo Bâ Teria were recently featured in the documentary film Movement (R)Evolution Africa (2007), available from Documentary Educational Resources (

Lacina works with Universities in USA (Brown University, Yale University, University of Florida, Cornell University, UCLA, Columbus University and so on) and dance school (ECA in New Haven) and EDIT (Burkina Faso) as Guest lecturer, Guest-teacher, artist-in-residence, and performer. He is currently Co-founder/director of the artistic company Siniyasigui association with Ousseni Sako.

Exploring themes of political, social and economic injustice, Jean Appolon Expressions opens the studio for a sneak peek of their new work Angaje. A series of interconnected dances, set to live percussion and Haitian folkloric music, Angaje will react to the recent surge in violence against homosexual young men in the context of contemporary Haiti.

Exploring concepts of interaction and communication in today’s expanding digital world, NY-based dance company, LaneCoArts will premiere The Space Between. The physical convergence of the performers intertwine with a diverse audio landscape of morse code, radio transmissions, television, multimedia technologies and electromagnetic wave formations to explore contrasts in culture and conversation.

Anna Reyes Dance in collaboration with Tamara Al-Mashouk
The Good Parts of Being Alive explores how outside influences shift the behavior between two people in love. Video and live performance collide when two of Boston’s boldest emerging artists—Anna Reyes, dance & Tamara Al-Mashouk, video art come together. Despite outside factors shaping shared connections, each individual has his/her unique experience in a romantic relationship. During The Good Parts of Being Alive, life mirrors art, when the audience traverses its own unique relationship with the piece as they walk through the Mills Gallery and experience multiple layers of the visual, physical and emotional.

Bittersweet is how life feels from one moment to the next. A shift in perspective, morphing sensations, bitter turned sweet or the other way around, and the all-confounding, both bitter and sweet at once. Choreographer Carey McKinley and sculptor Carolyn Lewenberg will create and ultimately destroy, an environment using bittersweet vines, bodies and moving images.

Quicksilver Dance
Boston Center for the Arts Dance Residency features Mariah Steele/Quicksilver Dance in Epoch Tales, a new work combining dance and science to explore the process of evolution. Echoing the movement of early life-forms, the piece will bring science to life by illuminating how the world may have moved in different evolutionary epochs. Other repertory featured will include a playful jaunt into the world of Frank Sinatra and an investigation into the cultural history of tea. Quicksilver will host a series of workshops that meld dance with disciplines of peace building, physics and writing on the BCA campus.

Boston Center for the Arts Dance Residency features Navarasa Dance Theater in My Dear Muddu Palani and other new works by Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda. My Dear Muddu Palani explores sensuality through literature and performance based on work written by Muddu Palani in the 18th century and challenges the way women’s bodies are viewed in modern societies both in the east and the west. Inspired by Indian classical and folk dance forms, Navarasa Dance Theater weaves together dance, singing, Kalari ppayattu (Indian martial art), and original music to create multilayered, multilingual performances.

Boston Center for the Arts Dance Residency features Kelley Donovan & Dancers in Polishing Stone, a showcase of new company works. Premiered works include In Reverse, a company work that explores concepts of transformation, and Polishing Stone, an intergenerational dance work that investigates the cycle of creation, destruction and rebuilding through collaboration with performers ages 10–76. In addition to creating new works during their residency, Kelley Donovan & Dancers will host a series of open rehearsals and workshops on the BCA campus in partnership with local senior centers.

Boston Center for the Arts hosts Rhode Island-based elephant JANE Dance, Heidi Henderson, and Boston-based Annie Kloppenberg & Co. for Movement at the Mills. These esteemed companies will connect pieces of choreography with site-specific improvisational episodes. Blending the line between audience and stage, pedestrian and performance, the dancers will explore the concept of ‘dancers at work’ in the nooks of the Mills Gallery space.

Boston Center for the Arts’ Dance Residency features Caitlin Corbett Dance Company’s most recent work I’m Like, No Way, a work in progress that considers the trajectory of recklessness through three duets and an octet. Other works featured include Without Word (1998), a lush, lyrical duet for two women and Duets (2009), an eclectic collection of 15 one-minute duets performed by a truly dynamic assortment of unlikely couplings, most of whom are non-dancers.

Boston Center for the Arts Dance Residency features Contrapose Dance in groundwork, a showcase of company repertory and commissioned works from 2010 through today. Works featured include the Boston premiere of Potemkin Piece by New York based choreographer Sydney Skybetter of skybetter and associates, a new work by Massachusetts-based choreographer Mariah Steele, and Ground, a work about frustration, repetitive efforts, and the resolution that comes from moving forward, by Contrapose Dance Artistic Director, Courtney Peix.

Boston Center for the Arts Dance Residency features Kairos Dance Theater in That Girl and the Other One, an experimental work-in-progress performance that explores the intense dynamics cultivated in relationships between women. Expanded from an existing series of seven duets to include a cast of 12 dancers, That Girl and The Other One, features choreography by DeAnna Pellecchia and Ingrid Schatz, lighting and set design by Lynda Reiman, and digital media by Alison Kotin.
