How is the vocabulary of traditional dance being used, pushed or even rejected by today’s choreographers?

Join Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) and Boston-based Ballets Russes Arts Initiative (BRAI) as we ask some of the area’s influential dance-makers “how does historical movement inspire and influence your work today?” Katerina Novikova (Bolshoi Press Secretary), David Parker (Bang Group), Peter DiMuro (Dance Complex) and Rebecca Rice (Rebecca Rice Dance) will discuss the blending of tradition and innovation in contemporary movement. Followed by a special screening of the ballet The Bolt from 8-9:45pm.

Choreographer Alexey Ratmansky and stage designer Simon Pastukh re-imagine Dmitri Shostakovich's early ballet, The Bolt, mothballed in 1931 without being premiered due to fears of censorship and government censure for its innovative and satirical nature. The production captures the original's caustic dissection of socialist realist fantasy through stunning dance sequences and inventive staging. A complex image of the contradictions of life in the early Soviet Union told in movement and music, with sets that channel the early Soviet avant-garde. Film directed by Vincent Bataillon, produced by Fancois Duplat. Introduced by Katerina Novikova (Bolshoi Theater) and Anna Winestein (BRAI).

Panel and screening presented by BCA and BRAI in partnership with the Modern Languages and Contemporary Literature Department at Boston University. Screening presented with the participation of Bel Air Media.
