Boston Center for the Arts Summer Solstice Celebration brings music and dance to the South End
Join the Boston Center for the Arts Summer Solstice Celebration on Saturday June 20, 2009 from1:00 pm - 5:00 pm on the BCA plaza.
A community tradition at the BCA, Summer Solstice now integrates dance, music as well as creative workshops for children into the schedule of activities. The BCA resident artist studios will also be open for self-guided tours from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
This event is free and open to the public. The BCA is located at 539 Tremont Street in the South End between Berkeley and Clarendon Streets. In case of inclement weather, the performances will take place in the Cyclorama Building at 539 Tremont Street.
Performances include:
1:00 pm Andy Cambria, Wesley Corbett, Simon Chrisman and David Goldenberg play a blend of contemporary folk grass music
1:50 pm Urbanity Dance is a community of dancers living and working in Boston made up of nurses, teachers, administrators, accountants, scientists, students, lawyers, writers and researchers. Urbanity’s eclectic fusion of dance incorporates ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, salsa, yoga and modern.

2:15 pm Zili Misik infuses Haitian, Brazilian and West African rhythms with reggae, blues, jazz and spirituals creating a sound uniquely its own. Zili Misik was the winner of the 2008 award for Outstanding International Music at the Boston Music Awards and voted Best World Music by WFNX and the Boston Phoenix.

3:30 pm Falling Flight Project is committed to dance as an empowering, collaborative and vital art form whose mission is to foster an interest in the arts. Falling Flight is dedicated to the growth of artists and the production of contemporary dance performance. The belief that dance should challenge the physical and mental boundaries of both the performer as well as the viewer pushes the choreographer to produce work that is diverse, culturally-inclusive and inspiring without boundaries.

4:00 pm Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents draws on the influences of the infamous girl groups of the sixties. Jenny Dee has been described as a cross between Ronnie Spector and Ike and Tina Turner.

4:50 pm Phunk Phenomenon combines traditional street dance with ballet, tap, and modern along with such musical forms as jazz, house, hip-hop, tribal and Latin.

Family Day at the BCA
An on-going series of workshops facilitated by BCA staff and artists to foster creativity and artistic development in theater and the visual arts for children ages 7 and up.
1:00-2:00 pm Monster Mask Making Workshop, Cyclorama
Children ages 7 and up can work with BCA visual artists to create their own monster mask using a variety of material. Participants are encouraged to use the mask for their costume in the Play in a Day Workshop that follows. Cost is $5.00 per child. Parents are welcome to participate with their child.
2:30 to 5:00 pm Play in a Day: Monsters under Boston, BCA Plaza Theatre
Children ages 7 and up will work with professional actors to develop their own characters and stage a performance in a BCA Plaza theater for family and friends. Children can speak as little or as much as they wish and perform at their own level. Cost is $5.00 per child and space is limited to 15 students. Parents are welcome to participate with their child.
Special rate of only $5 for each child that participates in both workshops. Advance registration is strongly recommended.
